Since its founding in 1923, Time magazine has always taken pride in its original cover art, commissioned especially for each week’s cover story. Newsmakers in numerous fields of endeavor have predominantly been featured, framed between Time’s signature red borders. The Portrait Gallery’s new Time exhibition, opening April 1 and running to September 11, 2016, highlights thirty-two original artworks of Hollywood celebrities, compiled from the museum’s Time Collection. Representative of the great pool of talented illustrators with whom the magazine contracted, this exhibition includes works by twenty-four master artists and photographers, many of whom were the magazine's go-to artists.
