Who Run the World?

It’s time to celebrate women—and not simply because it’s Women’s History Month! On March 24 from 5 to 7:30 p.m., the National Portrait Gallery is hosting Portraits After 5: #GirlBoss to celebrate the women in our museum’s collection and women everywhere who aren’t bossy—they’re the bosses.

Our Portraits After 5 program gives you a chance learn about and do more with the museum’s collection. If you’re interested in a tour of the portraits in “Eye Pop: The Celebrity Gaze,” we’ve gone straight to the top—our brilliant curators. Join them every half hour for gallery talks about some of the most intriguing female figures in the exhibition. If you learn by doing, put yourself in the Williams sisters’ shoes with a (table) tennis Grand Slam tournament. Practice your killer serve, refine that forehand volley, and gain a greater appreciation for the record-breaking bosses Venus and Serena.

Get your creative juices flowing and create your own pop art portraits complete with bold colors and shiny embellishments. If you’ve seen portraits by Mickalene Thomas, you know they put the POP in pop art. We’ve taken inspiration from her vibrant portraits of Oprah Winfrey, Condoleezza Rice, and FLOTUS herself, Michelle Obama. Perhaps you would rather sit back and embrace the adult coloring movement. We have markers, colored pencils, and crayons to complete coloring pages inspired by #GirlBoss. Enjoy food and drinks from the café as you listen to our feminist playlist pumping jams while you color.

Feeling confident in your women’s history knowledge? Show off your skills in a trivia contest. We are joining up with our popular Pop Quiz program to bring you a special #GirlBoss Pop Quiz at 6:30 p.m. Bring your friends to play on their team or challenge them as friendly rivals.
