Gouache on museum mounting board, 2008

30.5 x 27.9 cm (12 x 11 in.)

Artist Statement:
I am drawn to adolescents-their angst, their state of becoming, the way they look. When I met Nicholas I was struck by his appearance and his intensity. He wore an oversized shirt, with one hand buried inside his sleeve, his long, thick bangs hanging over his left eye. He appeared to be partially concealed. I was grateful that he allowed me to photograph him, so that I could paint his portrait.
