Nettie Fowler McCormick was an active partner in the work of her husband, Cyrus McCormick, inventor of the mechanical reaper. After his death in 1884, she led the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company as one of the country’s first female CEOs and oversaw its transition to the International Harvester Company in 1902. The devout Christian McCormick was also a lifelong philanthropist. She donated millions to charity and supported more than forty schools and colleges throughout the country, particularly the McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago.
