The Italian-born caricaturist Paolo Garretto knew Baker and claimed to have introduced her to her manager, Pepito Abatino. His collaged image of her, enlivened with a strip of wood veneer and threads of real feathers, conveys her beauty, athletic grace, and extraordinary vivacity. It was published in February 1936, in the last issue of Conde Nast's Vanity Fair, which featured brilliant, celebratory caricatures of international celebrities.
