title: A Durable Memento

Unidentified Couple

Unidentified couple

This daguerreotype of an unidentified couple, most likely a husband and wife, exhibits the rigid formality of Augustus Washington's early portraiture. The style of the woman's dress, as well as the inked stamp on the red silk pad opposite the portrait, suggest that it was made in 1847, soon after Washington moved his Hartford gallery from its original "9 Waverly building" location to its new address at 136 Main Street.
