David Antonio Cruz: Artist Statement

I use painting, video, sculpture, and costume-making to map out a queer, diasporic experience that has been suppressed from narratives of Puerto Rican migration.

Through a variety of new and found materials, such as enamel, gold-leaf, china, constructed costumes and rags, I layer my paintings and build up their surfaces in an attempt to make visible the queer body, to dress it, and depict the space where it exists. Whether I layer sound over sound or cover a painted figure in chocolate paint, I use seduction to prompt the viewer to question and negotiate what is being offered while partially obscuring the familiar.

Fixed between the fantasy world of Dorothy’s Oz and the politics of Maria’s West Side Story, my work is anchored in personal narratives, American and queer history events, classic films, and fashion, in order to reinterpret invisible histories of a migrating people and the queer body.

David Antonio Cruz: Declaración del Artista

Utilizo pinturas, vídeos, esculturas y vestidos confeccionados por mí como elementos para trazar un mapa de la experiencia diaspórica queer que ha sido suprimida de las narrativas de la migración puertorriqueña.

Mediante diversos materiales nuevos y encontrados, tales como esmalte, pan de oro, porcelana, trajes y trapos, desarrollo las superficies de mis pinturas y establezco en ellas relieves a fin de hacer visible el cuerpo queer, de vestirlo y representar el espacio en el cual existe. Ya sea que superponga distintos sonidos en mis vídeos, o cubra una figura con pintura de chocolate, seduzco al espectador para que cuestione y negocie lo que se ofrece y al mismo tiempo ocultar lo familiar.

Situada entre la fantasía de Dorothy en El Mago de Oz y la política de identidad de María en West Side Story, mi obra se ancla en narrativas personales, eventos de la historias estadounidense y queer, el cine clásico y la moda, a fin de reinterpretar historias invisibles de un pueblo migratorio.
