FROM CARD: "NOT TO BE LOANED-DR. GORDON GIBSON. THIS SPECIMEN PROBABLY THE ONE LISTED IN JOHN VARDEN'S WASHINGTON MUSEUM CATALOG (ORIGINAL IN SMITHSONIAN ARCHIVES) AS: "SANDAL OF THE ARABES." RECEIVED BY JOHN VARDEN FROM MRS POOR AND HER SON JOHN KERK POOR, JUNE 13, 1836. NO.7 IN CATALOG. - OCT. 25, 1951 - J.C.E. NOTE: THIS ONLY ARAB SANDAL ENTRY IN VARDEN'S CATALOG."
These sandals have holes in the soles, indicating they were exhibited on a mannequin at some time in the past. Stored with them are what appear to be two burlap-covered feet from an exhibit mannequin.
