Stein met Pablo Picasso in 1905, when she bought one of his paintings. Picasso asked her to sit for her portrait shortly thereafter. She was thirty-one and not yet published. Picasso was twenty four, living in a cold-water studio in Montmartre. Picasso’s intense portrait of his new patron set the template for Stein’s prewar bohemian identity. He painted her at three-quarter length, seated, with her luminous head dominating her body and the space around her.
Picasso was proud to see his canvas hanging in Stein’s collection, alongside works by his rival Henri Matisse and the inspirational Paul Cézanne. And Stein was proud of having “discovered” Picasso. In the 1920s, when she could no longer afford to collect the artist’s work, she began to pose for photographers while seated in front of the Picasso portrait, calling attention to their early friendship and collaborative portrait.
