John Rogers became the most popular U.S. sculptor of his day by mass-producing affordable, small-scale sculptural groups like this one. A fervent abolitionist, Rogers favored subjects that reflected his antislavery, pro-Union views. Here, he represents the moment when General Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885; standing, left) first proposed his plans for an aggressive military campaign against the Confederacy to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (1814–1869) and President Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865). Rogers designed this work in 1868, three years after Lincoln’s assassination.
