Chuck Close's self-portrait and the accompanying description of his collaboration with New York poet Bob Holman serve as an introduction to A Couple of Ways of Doing Something-an artist's book that pairs photographic portraits of prominent art-world figures by Close with corresponding "praise poems" by Holman. Five of these portraits are on display in the case at right. Begun in 1999, this joint project represents a continuation of Close's longtime exploration of the human face. Holman's stylistically eclectic poems further accentuate the individuality of each subject.
