Globally recognized scientist Katepalli R. Sreenivasan is currently dean of the Tandon School of Engineering at New York University and the Eugene Kleiner Professor for Innovation in Mechanical Engineering. His research focuses on the areas of turbulence, complex fluids, cryogenic helium, and nonlinear dynamics. After receiving his education in Bangalore, India, Sreenivasan held faculty positions at Yale University, the University of Maryland, and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. He has received awards from the Academy of Sciences and the American Physical Society, and he was awarded the UNESCO Medal for Promoting International Scientific Cooperation and World Peace.
In this portrait by Jon Friedman, Sreenivasan wears shirtsleeves and casual slacks, as if just finishing one of his lectures. Friedman’s close observations of Sreenivasan resulted in a work that not only appears photographic but also offers insight into his persona as professor, scientist, colleague, and dean.
