Braxton Bragg was one of many well-known West Point graduates who sided with their native southern states at the start of the Civil War. As a major general, Bragg first distinguished himself at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, where his men captured thousands of prisoners and many guns. In spite of Bragg's energy and organizational talents, his failure to follow up on his victories in the West eventually contributed to the fall of that vital region.
