Born New York City
Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most pictured men of his era. From the beginning of his career as a New York assembly member in the early 1880s to his death in 1919, he was always in the public eye.
Alvin Langdon Coburn took this photograph of Roosevelt at the White House on April 1, 1907, five months before Roosevelt sent the Great White Fleet on an international tour. The cannon in Ivanowski’s nearby painting may reference Roosevelt’s efforts to strengthen the U.S. Navy.
Only twenty-four, Coburn was already widely respected. Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, another one of his famous sitters, called him “the greatest photographer in the world.” There was no denying the vibrancy of Coburn’s portraiture, the best of which he compiled in Men of Mark (1913). This image of Roosevelt was included among the book’s thirty-three prints of American and European authors, artists, and politicians.
