Born Savannah, Georgia
During a series of expeditions into the West in the 1840s, John C. Frémont created detailed maps and reports that fueled American expansion. Hailed as a national hero for identifying a route through the Rocky Mountains, Frémont was elected in 1849 as California’s first U.S. senator. In 1856 he became the Republican Party’s first presidential candidate.
Brady’s earliest portrait of Frémont was in the form of a daguerreotype taken around the time of his election to the Senate. This ambrotype of the explorer-turned-politician was created several years later, most likely during Frémont’s unsuccessful campaign for president.
