Born Moreland Hills, Ohio
James Garfield was elected president in 1880, at a time of extreme political partisanship. Eleven days after the Republican nominated his cabinet, political cartoonist Joseph Keppler caricatured the group in his pro-Democratic magazine, Puck. Garfield stands second from the left, surrounded by cabinet officers whose costumes and props identify their roles. Samuel J. Kirkwood (1813–1894), secretary of the Department of the Interior (then located in this building) wears a fanciful version of Native American dress to indicate his responsibility for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Beside him, in blue military uniform, is Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln (1843–1926), son of President Abraham Lincoln. Represented as a mail carrier is Postmaster General Thomas L. James (1831–1916), who helped address corruption in his department.
Garfield’s closest advisor, Secretary of State James G. Blaine (1830–1893), was with the president when he was shot in July 1881. Unsanitary medical treatment resulted in Garfield’s death two months later.
