A great deal of thought went into making every Time cover, and suggestions could come from anyone, anywhere. Staff photographer Neil Leifer came up with the idea for this boxing theme: Why not focus on two news events with one click of the camera? That week Gerry Cooney (left) would be challenging defending champion Larry Holmes for the heavyweight boxing title. Cooney would lose. Meanwhile, Sylvester Stallone (right) was once again starring as boxer Rocky Balboa in Rocky III (1982). Predictably, Rocky regained the heavyweight title, and Stallone was yet again a hit at the box office.
