This cover photograph of President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George Bush illustrated an August 1984 story on the Republican National Convention, where the president and vice president were nominated for a second term. The title, Republican Encore-Coronation in Dallas, reflected a new Time poll indicating a "buoyant national mood giving the president a comfortable early lead." Because of an improving economy and stronger posture in the Cold War, voters judged Reagan better able than the Democratic nominee, Walter Mondale, to lower inflation, reduce unemployment, and deal with the Soviet Union. Although the Democratic Party made history by becoming the first major party to nominate a woman-Geraldine Ferraro-for vice president, the Time poll had voters preferring George Bush.
