Nelson Rockefeller (left), the four-term governor of New York, and Ronald Reagan (right), the two-term governor of California, had been serious contenders for the 1968 Republican presidential nomination. Richard Nixon, however, went on to win the Republican Party’s nomination.
This photograph was taken at the Republican National Convention held in Miami, Florida, in August 1972, when Nixon again secured the nomination. Rockefeller, who at the time represented the liberal wing of the party, and Reagan, who embodied the conservative wing, appeared on ABC’s weekly news program Issues and Answers. George Tames photographed them on the set of the show, where, despite their previous acrimony, Rockefeller and Reagan appeared as a unified front, backing Nixon’s nomination.
