The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery will present three interactive outdoor installations by artists MasPaz, Guache and Omar García, which have been commissioned for the museum’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration Nov. 2. Visitors will be invited to pay tribute to loved ones and share memories of those that have died by placing artworks, photographs or other offerings on two altars on the museum’s steps. A contemporary altar adorned with a painted mural by MasPaz will be placed right outside the museum’s G Street entrance, while a traditional altar, presented in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute, will be located at the museum’s Ninth Street steps.
At dusk, MasPaz and Guache will project a two-hour, live, digital painting, video and sound performance onto the G Street and Ninth Street façades of the museum’s building. The projection, to include photographs by García, will celebrate the Latino community and pay tribute to those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This extended public program received federal support from the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Latino Center.
Visitors and media of all ages are required to wear face coverings and socially distance while in the program area. Media can RSVP to kellyb@si.edu to attend or receive photo and video materials after.
