The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2013 showcases the forty-nine most inspiring and intriguing works of this triennial event. Figurative artists from around the nation are invited to submit entries in all media to be considered for prizes and display at the Smithsonian s National Portrait Gallery. More than 3,000 entries were received to be judged in the nation s most prestigious portrait competition. Submissions included a variety of media ranging from traditional oil paintings and drawings to contemporary works created from rice, glitter, thread and video. Grand-prize winner Bo Gehring received a $25,000 award for his video portrait Jennifer Wickham; he will also be commissioned to create a portrait of a renowned living American for NPG s collection. The book also includes an essay on portraiture by art historian Mary Sheriff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
